The Turkish Alphabet

 Hi everyone (herkese merhaba), nice to see you again. I’m Mahsa and today, we will learn the Turkish alphabet.

Learning the Turkish alphabet is important because its structure is used in everyday conversation.

The Turkish alphabet has 29 letters; Most Turkish letters are similar in pronunciation to their English counterparts, but Seven which (Çç, Ğğ, Iı, İi, Öö, Şş, Üü) have been modified from their Latin original to reflect the actual sounds of spoken Turkish.

Aa örneğin anne, Arkadaş, araba, abla

Bb örneğin baba, bebek, banka

Cc örneğin cam, ceket, cadde

Çç örneğin çiçek, çay, çadır (tent), çanta

Dd örneğin deniz, defter, duvar, dolmuş

Ee örneğin ekmek, eldiven, eczane, gel, ben, erik, elbise 

Note: When "e" is followed by the letters "le," "me," "ne," or "re," it is pronounced more like the "a" in "cat" due to a phenomenon called vowel harmony.)

Ff örneğin fare, fil, fener, Fındık, Fırsat

Gg örneğin Gül (rose), günlük (daily), Göl (lake)

Ğğ örneğin değil, değer, yağmur, dağ, ağaç

Note: “soft g” never occurs at the beginning of words." (Yumuşak ge" (Ğ ğ) or "soft g" always follows a vowel and is pronounced in one of two ways. If the yumasak g is followed by one of a, ı, o, u, will lengthen the sound of that vowel, eg. yağmur, ağaç. But when it is followed by e, i, ö, ü, will be pronounced as "y", eg. eğitim, iğne

Hh örneğin hasta (patient), havlu (towel), hat, hayat, huzur, havaalani

Jj örneğin jet motor, japonya

Iı örneğin ışık (light), kırmızı ışıktan geçmek (to run a (red) light), Irmak (river)

İi örneğin incir (fig), ikamet izni (residence permit), Göç İdaresi, İndirim (en. discount)

Kk örneğin kalem, kedi, kurs, kalmak, kazanmak, kaybetmek, kiralamak, kargo, Kış, Kız, Kalabalık

Ll örneğin limon, lahmacun, laf

Mm örneğin masa, mendil, maaş, mağaza

Nn örneğin nar, nal, neşeli

Oo örneğin okul, otobüs, oyun,

Öö örneğin örnek, öğrenci, öğretmen, ödül

Pp örneğin pastane, piyasa, para, pencere

Rr örneğin roket, resim, reçel (jam), resmi kurum (Official institution)

Ss örneğin satılık, sipariş etmek

Şş örneğin şampiyon, Şubat, Şık

Tt örneğin tatlı, tarak, tutumlu

Uu örneğin  Uzun, Usta, Uzak

Üü örneğin Üzüm, Üst, Ümit

Vv örneğin varmak, varlıklı,

Yy örneğin Yatak, Yasak, yüzme yeleği (swimming vest)

Zz örneğin Zürafa, Zeytin, Zaman
